Vietnam Tops the Charts as the Most Affordable Place for Expats

Vietnam has been recognized as the most affordable country for expats to live in for the fourth consecutive year by InterNations. This ranking is based on personal finances and factors such as cost of living, satisfaction with financial situation, and disposable household income. While Vietnam may have come in 40th for quality of life and 29th for expat essentials, it ranked 14th for working abroad, taking into consideration career prospects, salary, and job security.

According to the 2024 InterNations study, the top 10 destinations for expats when it comes to personal finances are Vietnam, Colombia, Indonesia, Panama, Philippines, India, Mexico, Thailand, Brazil, and China. This year, Asian countries took the lead, with six out of the top 10 countries being from Asia. Southeast Asian countries particularly stood out, with Vietnam, Indonesia, Philippines, and Thailand all making it into the top 10 list.

Vietnam not only offers low living costs but also higher incomes for expats compared to the global average. According to InterNations, close to double the global average of expats in Vietnam report a gross yearly income of $150,000 or more. Additionally, general job satisfaction among expats in Vietnam is considerably high, with work-life balance being prioritized over career advancement. The country also has a lower percentage of expats working full time compared to the global average.

Expats in Vietnam reported high levels of satisfaction with their financial situation, cost of living, and disposable income. In fact, 86% of surveyed expats in Vietnam rate the cost of living favorably, which is more than twice the global average. More than half of the expats in Vietnam are satisfied with their financial situation and feel that they have more than enough disposable income to lead a comfortable life. This stress-free environment has been appreciated by many expats living in the country, offering a welcome change from their previous hectic work life.

Apart from personal finances, Vietnam also scored well in the broader expat experience category. The InterNations Expat Insider study considered factors such as general happiness, quality of life, ease of settling in, working abroad, and „expat essentials“ like administration, housing, digital life, and language. Vietnam made it into the overall top 10 list globally, highlighting the positive experience that expats have in the country.
