The Best and Worst Airports in the World for On-Time Performance

Airports are more than just gateways to different destinations these days. They come equipped with a variety of amenities such as indoor waterfalls, rooftop pools, and yoga studios. However, despite the fancy features, most travelers would prioritize flights that consistently arrive on time over anything else.

One company that values punctuality is AirHelp, which recently ranked 239 airports in 69 countries based on the on-time performance of flights operating from May 2023 to April 2024. The on-time performance, defined as flights arriving within 15 minutes of their published arrival times, accounted for 60% of each airport’s score. The remaining 40% was based on passenger opinions of each airport, as well as traveler ratings of its food and shops.

By isolating on-time performance scores, a new list of top performers emerged. The airports with the highest on-time performance scores include:

Factors Affecting On-Time Performance

On-time performance is not solely reliant on the operations of airlines and airports. External factors such as adverse weather conditions, congestion, incidents, and industrial action can also cause delays. Nevertheless, on-time performance is a significant indicator for airlines and airports to differentiate and market their brands.

When passenger opinion scores were considered, airports like Nashville Airport, Singapore Changi Airport, and Doha Hamad Airport emerged on top. The overall winner, Doha Hamad, also received the top score for its food and shops, followed by Dubai Airport and Japan’s Sapporo New Chitose Airport.

On-time performance is a critical aspect of the overall airport experience. While amenities and aesthetics are important, travelers value punctuality above all else. The rankings provided by AirHelp shed light on the best and worst-performing airports in terms of on-time performance, giving travelers valuable insights into what to expect when passing through these airports.
