Exploring Royal Caribbean International’s Future Ship Class

During a recent media briefing aboard the Utopia of the Seas, Royal Caribbean International’s CEO, Michael Bayley, hinted at an exciting new ship class in the works. Referred to as the Discovery class, details about this new venture are scarce, but it promises to bring something unique to the cruising industry.

Bayley suggested that the Discovery class may consist of smaller ships designed to navigate ports previously inaccessible to larger vessels. For cities like Baltimore and Tampa, where bridges pose a challenge for bigger cruise ships, the Discovery class could provide a solution. By exploring new ports and destinations, Royal Caribbean aims to offer passengers a diverse range of experiences.

In addition to teasing the Discovery class, Royal Caribbean’s leadership team revealed plans to bring a second ship to Los Angeles. The Ovation of the Seas, a Quantum-class ship launched in 2016, will start sailing three-, five-, and six-night cruises from Los Angeles on May 28. This move signals the cruise line’s commitment to expanding its presence on the West Coast and catering to a wider audience.

To incentivize travel advisors to promote the Ovation of the Seas, Bayley and Senior Vice President Vicki Freed mentioned the potential for future Icon class ships. By generating strong sales for the Ovation, advisors can contribute to the deployment of larger ships in Los Angeles. This strategy not only benefits Royal Caribbean but also rewards advisors for their efforts in promoting the cruise line’s offerings.

Bayley’s previous hints about future ship deployments, particularly in Texas, suggest that Royal Caribbean is constantly exploring new markets and opportunities. With plans for the Discovery class and potential Icon class ships, the cruise line is poised for continued growth and innovation in the coming years.

Overall, Royal Caribbean’s focus on creating unique ship classes and expanding to new destinations demonstrates its commitment to evolving with the changing demands of the cruise industry. The introduction of the Discovery class and the deployment of ships like the Ovation of the Seas signal a promising future for the cruise line and its passengers. As developments unfold, travelers and industry insiders can look forward to exciting new experiences with Royal Caribbean International.
