The looming threat of a pilots‘ strike at Air Canada on September 17 has prompted the airline to take preemptive measures. This comes after the recent strike-authorizing vote by the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) on August 22, with an overwhelming 98% approval rate. Negotiations for a new labor contract, which began in June 2023, have hit a roadblock, leading to the possibility of a strike.
In response to the potential strike, Air Canada has waived change fees and fare differences for passengers with bookings between September 15 and September 23. This measure aims to provide certainty to travelers amidst the uncertainty surrounding the labor dispute. Passengers can rebook their flights with the same origin and destination through November 30 without incurring additional charges. However, fare differences will apply for rebookings after November 30.
Private mediation between the parties, which took place from January to June, ultimately reached an impasse, leading to the initiation of the three-week cooling off period mandated by Canadian law. During this period, both Air Canada and ALPA have expressed their commitment to reaching a negotiated settlement. The airline has acknowledged the progress made during negotiations and expressed its dedication to meaningful bargaining.
While ALPA has emphasized its desire to avoid a strike and continue negotiations in good faith, the union has also highlighted its preparedness for any outcome. The chair of the Air Canada ALPA Master Executive Council, Charlene Hudy, has called upon Air Canada management to recognize the value of their employees and avert the potential strike.
In addition to the labor dispute, ALPA has raised concerns about the Canada Industrial Relations Board’s decision to order striking freight train workers back to work and impose binding arbitration between the Teamsters union and Canada’s major freight railway companies. This decision has further complicated the labor landscape in Canada.
As the September 17 deadline approaches, uncertainty looms over Air Canada and its passengers. While efforts are being made to avoid a strike and secure a new labor agreement, the possibility of disruptions in air travel remains.
