The Dangers of Lithium-Ion Batteries on Airline Flights

The use of devices powered by lithium-ion batteries has become more prevalent in recent years, leading to a rise in overheating incidents onboard airline flights. According to a report released by UL Standards, these incidents have increased by 28% from 2019 to 2023. While still relatively rare, the frequency of these events is concerning.

Among all the devices, e-cigarettes were found to overheat more often than any other. Reports from 35 airlines indicated that in 60% of cases, the overheating incidents, also known as thermal runaway, occurred near the seat of the passenger who had brought the device onboard. This poses a significant risk not only to the individual but also to the safety of the entire flight.

Despite regulations set by the TSA prohibiting e-cigarettes and chargers with lithium-ion batteries in checked bags, a survey revealed that more than one-quarter of passengers admitted to doing so. This blatant disregard for safety protocols puts everyone on the flight at risk, as fires in the cargo hold are harder to detect and extinguish.

UL Standards, a safety-science company, has based its findings on data collected from various airlines and reported incidents. The FAA reported 37 thermal-runaway incidents on planes this year alone, with a drastic 71% increase compared to the previous year. These statistics highlight the urgency for stricter safety standards to prevent potential disasters.

Years of incidents involving lithium-ion batteries have underscored the dangers they pose, especially at high altitudes. Following crashes of cargo planes carrying these batteries in 2010 and 2011, there were calls for stricter regulations. However, the aviation industry’s resistance to such standards has led to continued risks and incidents onboard flights.
