Brewing Memories: A Year of Exceptional Beers in 2024

As the year 2024 comes to a close, it’s time to reflect on the remarkable brews that have defined my drinking experience. With each sip of beer, I often find myself engulfed in nostalgia or inspiration, questioning my previous perceptions about this age-old beverage. Throughout the year, I stumbled upon eight standout beers, each leaving an indelible mark on my palate and mind. Here’s a closer look at this liquid art that transcends the ordinary, elevating my appreciation for craft beers.

Discovering Cask Beers at ForeLand Beer

My exploration of intriguing brews began on a sunny day in Portland, Oregon, at the cozy newly emerged brewery, ForeLand Beer. This was a memorable happy hour spent with my good friend, beer writer Jeff Alworth. What truly captivated me that day was a collaboration between ForeLand and Hood River’s Kings and Daughters. Served via cask, this beer featured a hand pump mechanism that delivered a unique experience. With lower carbonation and a warmer temperature than typical kegs, cask beers provide a taste and texture that can be transformative. The beer, served in a German style glass, was rich with a toasty malt backbone that still lingers in my memory. Cask beers are finally making a name in the U.S., and this particular offering had me reconsidering the potential of malt.

Counter Weight’s Smoky Delight

Next on my beer journey was a stop in my home state of Connecticut, where Counter Weight brewery shines as one of the premier lager producers. A visit in January introduced me to their rauchbock, a stronger smoked lager originating from Bamberg, Germany. As the winter chill enveloped me, this 6.2% ABV beer delivered a delightful combination of smokiness intertwined with a smooth backdrop of dark malt. The expertise and passion evident in Connecticut’s craft brewing scene continuously impress me, and this rauchbock was a perfect example of the indie brewery’s artistry in action.

A Taste of Plum at Hill Farmstead Brewery

Having witnessed a breathtaking total solar eclipse earlier in the year, my next flavorful adventure took me to Hill Farmstead Brewery in Greensboro Bend, Vermont — often hailed as one of the world’s best breweries. There, I sipped a low-alcohol mixed fermentation sour that exuded vibrant plum flavors. The intriguing use of pomace gave this beer its rich purple hue and joyful fruit notes. With an ABV of only 2%, it was refreshing without being overwhelming. This experience made me realize how thoughtful brewing can produce something extraordinary, even from ingredients that might seem challenging at first.

In search of more unique offerings, my travels took me to Offset Bier Co., near the recreation-friendly allure of Park City, Utah. There, I enjoyed a delightful DOPO IPA, a 5% ABV brew featuring an impressive medley of Mosaic, Nelson Sauvin, and Simcoe hops. This beer’s light, breezy characteristics made it a perfect companion for enjoying outdoor activities. The relaxed ambience of the brewery paired beautifully with the drink, which had garnered accolades from Craft Beer and Brewing magazine, confirming its height of quality.

As my journey continued, I found myself in Cleveland, Ohio, indulging in a hazy IPA at the popular dive bar Knockback Nat’s after a thrilling Reds game. With roots deeply planted in the New England craft beer scene, I approached this Masthead Brewing offering with high expectations. To my delight, the first sip delivered a burst of juicy orange flavors balanced by a fuller mouthfeel — everything I could hope for in this style. This exquisite 6.7% ABV hazy was not just another IPA; it was a symphony of flavors crafted impeccably.

A Yorkshire Classic in England

Late in the summer, after a refreshing wander in the Yorkshire Dales, I stumbled upon the Green Dragon pub in Hadrow, famed for its appearance in „All Creatures Great and Small.“ Immersing myself in local culture, I savored Old Peculier, a 5.6% ABV classic brewed since the early 1800s. This beer, with its dominant cherry and toasty notes, encapsulated the essence of a traditional U.K. brew. Sharing this moment with fellow beer lovers created a delightful communal experience amidst the rich tapestry of British brewing history.

While traversing the Great American Beer Festival in Denver, I ventured to Third Eye Brewing on the recommendation of my podcast cohost Don Tse. Typically not drawn to pumpkin beers, I was pleasantly surprised by their 6.3% ABV offering. It blended nostalgic pumpkin pie flavors with a roasty texture that kept me coming back for more. This experience reminded me that sometimes, stepping outside of comfort zones can yield the most rewarding surprises.

Hot and Fresh in Merida, Mexico

Finally, my journey concluded in Merida, Mexico, where I encountered a local gem: a west coast IPA from Cerveza Fervor. Despite the challenges of maintaining hop freshness in hot climates, this 5.6% ABV brew was brightly hoppy and incredibly refreshing. Engaging with local beer culture, I shared infectious enthusiasm over pints with friends, truly embodying the spirit of craft beer as a global unifier.

With each of these exceptional beers, 2024 reminded me of the power of sharing a drink and conversation with friends and family. I look forward to another year filled with discoveries and celebrations through the world of craft beer. Cheers to life, friendship, and the brews that bring us together!
