Delta Air Lines Faces Criticism From Microsoft Over IT Modernization

Microsoft has fired back at Delta Air Lines in response to the accusations made by Delta CEO Ed Bastian regarding the recent massive IT outage. The software giant accuses Delta of failing to modernize its technology prior to the cancelation of thousands of flights following the incident. According to Mark Cheffo, a Dechert partner representing Microsoft, Delta’s IT infrastructure appears to be outdated compared to its competitors, resulting in a slower recovery from the outage.

In response to Microsoft’s claims, Delta emphasized its long-standing commitment to investing in safe, reliable, and superior service for its customers and employees. The airline stated that since 2016, it has invested billions of dollars in IT capital expenditures, in addition to annual spending on IT operating costs. Delta refuted the allegations of failing to comply with contractual requirements and negligence, asserting that it has continually strived to enhance its IT systems.

Missed Opportunities for Assistance

Microsoft’s letter revealed that the company had offered to assist Delta at no cost following the IT outage. However, Delta allegedly turned down the offer for help from Microsoft employees multiple times during the recovery process. Ironically, while Delta struggled to restore its crew-tracking and scheduling system, which is serviced by providers such as IBM and Amazon, it declined support from Microsoft, leading to further delays in resolving the issues.

Despite its reliance on IBM and Amazon for certain IT services, Delta’s refusal of Microsoft’s assistance highlights potential gaps in collaboration among technology providers. The airline’s choice to work with different technology vendors for various systems may have inadvertently caused complications in integrating solutions during critical incidents such as the recent IT outage. Microsoft’s demand for records from Delta regarding the contributions of IBM, Amazon, and other partners further underscores the need for a cohesive approach to IT operations and system recovery.
