Expedition Sailing: The Importance of Experience and Size

Embarking on an expedition sailing trip to the Arctic Circle, one quickly realizes the significance of experience and size when it comes to choosing the right vessel. Last summer, I had the opportunity to sail for two weeks on the Sylvia Earle, one of Aurora Expeditions‘ new ships with a capacity of 132 passengers. The journey took us to the Svalbard archipelago, where we engaged in hiking and wildlife spotting activities amidst the stunning landscapes of glaciers, islands, and icebergs.

A Fortuitous Stop in Jan Mayen

During our Arctic sailing expedition, the importance of experience and relationships in expedition sailing was highlighted when the expedition leader, Howard Whelan, made arrangements for us to land on the island of Jan Mayen. Despite facing an unseasonable ice jam along the coast of Greenland, our prior interaction with the commander of a Norwegian military base on Jan Mayen allowed us to explore its rugged coastline and cliffs. This impromptu stop turned out to be a stroke of luck as it enabled us to continue our journey without the need for customs clearance in Greenland.

The collective experience of the expedition team, led by Howard Whelan, and the captain of the ship became evident as they navigated around ice obstacles and discovered rarely explored beaches and coastlines. One such discovery was the island of Norder Aputiteq, where we stumbled upon the ruins of an abandoned weather station from the 1940s and an Inuit dwelling. These experiences showcased the true essence of expedition sailing, combined with the comfort and luxury provided by modern ships like the Sylvia Earle.

In the rapidly growing expedition cruising market, newer and larger ships are making their entry. However, traditional operators like Aurora Expeditions, Albatros Expeditions, and Quark are leveraging their decades of experience by offering eco-friendly, purpose-built ships that prioritize comfort, luxury, and exploration over extravagance. While these smaller ships may lack certain amenities like butlers and 24-hour room service, they compensate with spacious cabins, gourmet dining, heated bathroom floors, and leisure facilities like swimming pools and saunas.

With the upcoming launch of its third ship, the Douglas Mawson, Aurora Expeditions is poised to cater to the growing demand for small-sized vessels in polar regions. Starting from January 1, only ships with 200 or fewer passengers will be permitted to land in specific areas in Svalbard, emphasizing the importance of small ship sizes for expedition cruising. The Douglas Mawson, designed with the latest Ulstein X-Bow technology for enhanced efficiency, will offer a range of staterooms and suites with private balconies, along with public spaces like restaurants, bars, a swimming pool, gym, sauna, and observation decks.

In destinations like Antarctica, where passenger limits apply for landings, smaller ships like the Douglas Mawson hold an advantage. By accommodating fewer passengers, these ships enable guests to embark on multiple off-ship excursions each day, maximizing exploration opportunities. With its Nordic interior design, varied cabin categories, and focus on environmental sustainability, the Douglas Mawson aims to provide a unique and enriching expedition experience for travelers seeking adventure in remote polar regions.

Through my expedition sailing journey, I came to appreciate the synergy between experience, ship size, and exploration opportunities in remote and pristine environments. As the expedition cruising industry evolves, a balance between comfort, sustainability, and adventure will continue to drive the design and operation of modern expedition ships, shaping the future of expedition sailing for generations to come.
