The Growing Trend of Younger Cruisers in the Industry

The cruise industry is experiencing a shift towards attracting younger customers, particularly millennials and Gen Z, as revealed by recent data from Royal Caribbean Group. With a focus on providing unique experiences and shorter cruise options, cruise lines are adapting to cater to the changing preferences of younger travelers.

Royal Caribbean Group’s CEO, Jason Liberty, highlighted the company’s efforts to capture the attention of younger generations through the introduction of party vibes and shorter cruises on the Utopia of the Seas. With one in every two customers being millennials or younger, the company is intentionally diversifying its offerings to meet the evolving demands of this demographic.

A significant portion of new cruise customers are millennials and Gen Z, according to Liberty. The appeal of shorter Caribbean cruises has attracted a younger clientele, with new cruisers showing a strong intent to cruise again in the future. Additionally, an increasing number of younger guests are choosing to sail with brands like Silversea Cruises, indicating a growing trend across the industry.

Travel advisors have noted the influx of younger cruisers, attributing it to the plethora of new megaships and diverse offerings that cater to families, multigenerational travelers, and group celebrations. Shorter cruises, in particular, have proven popular among the younger demographic, with Caribbean itineraries being a top choice for travelers between the ages of 25 and 34.

Data from a CLIA survey revealed that millennials and Gen Z collectively accounted for 36% of cruise passengers in the past two years, signaling a shift towards a younger demographic. The average age of cruisers has slightly decreased, with a high intention to repeat the cruising experience across different generations.

Carnival Corp. has also noticed changes in customer demographics, with slight variations in average ages across different cruise brands. While there is a focus on attracting younger customers, the company remains inclusive of all age groups to ensure a diverse mix of cruisers onboard.

The cruise industry is undergoing a transformation to align with the preferences of younger travelers, particularly millennials and Gen Z. By offering innovative experiences, shorter cruise options, and diverse itineraries, cruise lines are attracting a new generation of cruisers and setting the stage for continued growth and evolution in the industry.
